JOB TITLE:

Building Automation Technician

The Building Automation Technician is responsible for installing, programming, maintaining, and troubleshooting building automation systems (BAS) that control HVAC, lighting, energy management, and other facility systems. This role ensures optimal system performance, energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and compliance with operational standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and commission building automation systems, including controllers, sensors, actuators, and network components 
  • Program and modify BAS software and control logic to meet project and operational requirements 
  • Perform routine maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting of automation systems and associated equipment 
  • Monitor system performance and identify opportunities for optimization and energy savings 
  • Assist with system upgrades, retrofits, and expansions 
  • Interpret mechanical, electrical, and control drawings, schematics, and sequences of operation 
  • Integrate BAS with third-party systems such as lighting controls, access control, and energy management systems 
  • Respond to service calls and resolve system issues in a timely and professional manner 
  • Document system configurations, changes, and service activities 
  • Support facility staff and clients by providing technical guidance and training as needed 
  • Follow safety procedures, codes, and company standards at all times 

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical diploma or associate degree preferred 
  • Minimum of 2–5 years of experience working with building automation or control systems 
  • Working knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical fundamentals, and control theory 
  • Experience with BAS platforms (such as Delta, Niagara, Schneider, Siemens, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Trane, or similar) 
  • Basic understanding of networking concepts (IP addressing, BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, etc.) 
  • Ability to read and interpret construction and control documents 
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills 
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Manufacturer certifications or training in building automation systems 
  • Experience with energy management and system optimization 
  • Familiarity with commissioning processes 
  • Knowledge of building codes, ASHRAE standards, and industry best practices 
  • Communication skills in both English and French are an asset 
  • Reliability or Secret Level II Clearance are an asset

  • Some after-hours or on-call work may be required
